The KCMO shelter (4400 Raytown Rd KCMO 64129) houses ~9,000 animals annually. The building is dilapidated and has limited space. The amount of time each animal has there varies. Longest residents and bully breeds are at greatest risk of being put down at any given time.

These dogs have waited SOOO LONG to be part of a family. If you're interested in meeting, fostering and/or adopting them or any other animals from the KCMO pound, please email katiea_knapp@yahoo.com

BUNGI – This girl is a dream. She is listed as a shepherd mix, but is much smaller than a shepherd and her hair is much shorter. She loves to chase tennis balls and then jump into the baby pool. She is hysterical! When Bungi jumps in and lies down in the pool (and sometimes rolls over on her back to get her belly scratched), she will begin to dig at the bottom. Then she tries to paw the ball and doesn’t understand why it’s bobbing. Bungi knows sit, stay and release the ball. She loves to be rubbed and scratched and makes great eye contact. Think she would be good with other dogs but not cats. Bungi is one who needs lots of exercise but after being played out, she will snuggle with you. LOVES attention and NEEDS lots of exercise.

SAMMIE – This guy is a big black lab with burnt orange eyes that will look into your soul for a treat!  He sits very nicely.  He loves to put the leash in his mouth when you hook him up and during the initial minute of his walk.  This boy needs of exercise but seems to tire easily.  Once he is able to release his energy, he settles right down.  Sammie is very treat motivated.  He loves running in the play yard chasing tennis balls.  He retrieves, returns and releases for you.  Sammie has “specific” likes and dislikes for other dogs.  Some are okay but others he simply doesn’t like.  Kind of like people pick and choose their friends too.  One thing to be sure, he doesn’t like cats.  He is also particular about the water.  One day he may really enjoy getting in the pool and lying down and the next he may not.  This guy will keep you on your toes!  He has been known to be an escape artist.  He has to have his kennel door clipped shut because he knows how to lift the latch with his nose.  Told you he was smart!  Sammie has wonderful eye contact and with some extra love and training, could make someone a once in a lifetime pet.

AVA – She is the softest pit bull you will EVER touch!  Ava loves the play yard and she likes and plays with some dogs but there are a few she does not care for.  She needs to be monitored with any new dogs to first check to see if they meet her standards.  Ava, like many pits, needs to be exercised at least twice a day and she will pull on the leash unless you first play with her to help alleviate her energy.  She has also been known to jump fences but not if you are with her.  She simply wants to be with other people.  She is a huge kisser and appreciates love and attention.  She will lie down on a cool floor like a frog with her back legs straight out to cool down.  Come check out her soft fur!  (TWO PHOTOS OF HER BELOW)

OMAR – He is black lab mix with a bobbed tail (ouch!)  He is a people pleaser and very treat motivated.  He learned to sit, stay and down for a treat in less than 5 minutes.  He is very smart!  Omar even enjoys being bathed because he feels so much better afterwards.  He likes chasing balls and sometime even stumbles over his two front paws when he gets excited chasing balls.  He is also a great kisser and soaks up the attention.  Omar only wants interaction, attention and love from his constant companion.  Omar is a jumper so you don’t want to let him alone in a fenced yard (even 6’ tall).  He has not adjusted well being kenneled.  He has jumped so much at his kennel door that he has hurt his knee.  Omar just had knee surgery a week ago and is doing great.  He needs someone who wants to spend one-on-one time with him and assure him he has a forever home.  He will return three times the love that he is shown – GUARANTEED!

FIJI – Yet another wonderful pit bull. She does pull on a leash and has a tendency to jump in front of you when first let out of her kennel to begin her walk. This is simply due to her being kenneled 24/7 unless a volunteer gets her out for a walk. Fiji has a huge heart to match her huge smile! She is very treat motivated which makes her a smart dog (like smart humans too!) If taken into a fenced area, she becomes another dog. She is another pittie “hugger” off leash and wants to know where you are. Fiji sniffs around a bit but ultimately wants you to sit in the grass with her so she can lie on her back (a very submissive position) to scratch and rub her all over. She is a wonderful kisser. If you wear glasses, have the glass cleaner handy! Fiji craves love and attention (like who doesn’t?). If she stops and looks at you (when walking her on leash), she wants a treat. Fiji knows to sit for a treat so you can’t resist her request. Can you ever over treat a dog???? Fiji deserves someone who will give her the attention she so deserves and earns everyday by being your loyal companion.

Wilhelmina loves belly rubs! She LOVES both walking and jogging! We find that she is the happiest lying in the grass getting some tummy love! She will make a wonderful family dog! Please come meet her!
